About us

FreeState Equality’s mission is to advance LGBTQ+ rights and civic participation across Maryland, with a focus on the communities most impacted by discrimination including: trans people, people living with HIV, LGBTQ+ youth, and seniors.

At its core, FreeState Equality is grounded in human rights, equity, accountability, and visibility. The organization rejects the idea that LGBTQ+ rights are up for debate — and works to normalize full inclusion in every aspect of Maryland life. It will work to shape advocacy priorities, push for legislative solutions, and mobilize voters, ensuring community needs directly inform political action.

The first year will focus on awareness, accountability, and infrastructure:

  • Launching the organization publicly
  • Developing and distributing legislative scorecards
  • Building relationships with community partners and policymakers
  • Engaging Marylanders ahead of the next election cycle

In the years ahead, FreeState Equality will grow into a regional advocacy leader, supporting inclusive candidates and policies across the Mid-Atlantic. By 2028, the goal is to help mobilize LGBTQ+ and allied voters on a scale that transforms civic participation and strengthens democracy across our region.
